Lot 355B:
Description
Extremely unusual and highly functional 19th century walnut writing chair featuring an integrated swivel writing surface and concealed storage. The chair retains its original figural tapestry upholstery depicting medieval style scenes and heraldic motifs. The shaped wooden writing tablet swings into position for use and lifts to reveal hidden compartments beneath, while an additional drawer is fitted below the seat for further storage. The frame is constructed of solid walnut with carved arms, turned legs, and original brass casters. Pieces of this form are sometimes referred to as a reading, writing, or scholar’s chair and were designed to combine seating and workspace in a compact footprint. A scarce and visually striking example of Victorian multi-functional furniture with strong decorative appeal and remarkable ingenuity of design.
