Description
Original oil on canvas painting by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a picturesque Italian riverside cityscape with historic stone buildings, tiled rooftops, and an arched masonry bridge spanning calm reflective water. Warm Mediterranean tones of ochre and terracotta architecture contrast with soft blue sky and atmospheric reflections across the river, creating a tranquil Old World scene reminiscent of Rome and the Tiber River. The composition shows confident impressionistic brushwork with strong architectural forms and luminous light reflecting across the water. Signed lower right “Schafer.” Canvas measures approximately 36 x 24 inches. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, WWII veteran of the 13th Armored Division who served in Italy before studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later producing and exhibiting paintings locally through the family business, Schafers Cleaners, operating in Jackson since 1898.
