Lot 339:
Description
Large original oil on canvas seascape by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting waves crashing dramatically against a rugged rocky shoreline beneath a turbulent sky. Executed with energetic brushwork and layered palette knife texture, the composition emphasizes the movement of water breaking across the stratified rocks while cool blue-green tones of the sea contrast with the warm earth tones of the shoreline. Schafer’s confident handling of light and motion gives the scene a powerful sense of atmosphere and coastal energy, suggesting the artist’s fascination with natural landscapes encountered during his travels and memories from his time overseas during World War II. Signed lower right “Schafer.” Canvas measures approximately 40 x 30 inches and is presented in an attractive carved and gilt wood frame measuring approximately 48 x 37.5 inches overall. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Keith Shafer, WWII veteran of the 13th Armored Division who served in Italy before studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later producing and exhibiting paintings locally through the family business, Schafer’s Cleaners, operating in Jackson since 1898.
