Lot 338:
Description
Large original oil on canvas portrait by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a young woman standing in three-quarter profile with folded hands, dressed in a white blouse and brown vest with brass buttons. The subject’s thoughtful expression and softly rendered features demonstrate Shafer’s strong academic portrait training, while the loose painterly background allows the figure to emerge with quiet presence and dignity. The warm palette of creams, browns, and muted earth tones complements the sitter’s dark hair and gentle expression, creating a balanced and intimate composition. Signed lower right “Schafer.” The painting measures approximately 24 x 36 inches on canvas and is housed in an ornate carved and gilded frame measuring approximately 30.5 x 42 x 2.25 inches. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, WWII veteran of the 13th Armored Division who served in Italy before studying at the Art Institute of Chicago and later exhibiting and selling his work locally for decades through Schafer’s Cleaners, the family business operating in Jackson since 1898.
