Description
Original oil on canvas still life painting by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a bouquet of full white and blush peonies arranged in a purple vase beside a reflective brass pitcher set on a tabletop. The composition is executed with confident impressionistic brushwork and soft layered tones, with thick palette work defining the blossoms against a muted gray background. The piece presents strong painterly highlights and texture throughout the floral arrangement and vessel surfaces. Canvas measures approximately 25 x 30 inches, housed in an ornate distressed gilt and painted frame measuring approximately 30 x 35 inches with a depth of about 2.25 inches. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Keith Shafer, a WWII veteran who served in Italy with the 13th Armored Division and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Schafer family owned Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, operating since 1898, where many of his works were displayed and sold during the 1950s–1970s, with additional works handled through the Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
