Lot 332:
Description
Original oil on canvas landscape painting by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a peaceful autumn riverside scene with two trees in warm rust and orange foliage overlooking a calm reflective shoreline. The composition features loose expressive brushwork and layered earth tones with soft atmospheric sky tones that capture the feeling of late autumn light. The painterly treatment of the foliage and shoreline reflects Shafer’s impressionistic approach to Midwestern landscapes. Canvas measures approximately 24 x 20 inches and is mounted on a Grumbacher stretcher. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, a WWII veteran who served in Italy with the 13th Armored Division and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Shafer family owned Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, operating since 1898, where many of his works were displayed and sold during the 1950s–1970s, with additional works handled through the Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
