Lot 327:
Description
Oil on canvas abstract composition attributed to Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer featuring an expressive mid-century modern arrangement of layered blue, gray, and white fields accented with gestural brown brushwork, dripped linear elements, and vivid yellow highlights. The painting shows confident palette knife and brush application with energetic movement across the surface, characteristic of mid-20th century abstract experimentation. Canvas measures approximately 24 x 20 inches and is mounted on a stretcher. From the estate of Henry Schafer, a Jackson, Michigan artist and WWII veteran of the 13th Armored Division who served in Italy and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Schaefer frequently displayed and sold his work through Schaefer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson during the 1950s–1970s, with additional works handled through Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
