Lot 322:
Description
Antique American salt glazed stoneware butter churn decorated with hand painted cobalt floral motifs and the numeral “6” indicating six gallon capacity, retaining its original wooden dasher and green painted churn lid. The vessel displays a classic tapered churn form with applied lug handles, incised shoulder bands, and a thick rolled rim, while the interior is finished in dark Albany slip glaze typical of butter churns used in late 19th century farmhouse kitchens. The cobalt decoration features stylized leaves and blossoms arranged around the body, providing strong visual contrast against the warm buff stoneware surface. Condition shows honest age and use with a visible hairline crack near the base along with minor wear to the lid and dasher consistent with period utility. Measures approximately 19 inches tall including the dasher. A desirable and complete example of American country stoneware combining bold cobalt decoration with its original working churn components, appealing to collectors of primitive kitchen antiques and early American pottery.
