Lot 310:
Description
Antique American stoneware crock featuring a bold hand-painted cobalt bee sting decoration in a classic spiral and dash motif. The crock displays a traditional cylindrical form with applied lug handles and a rolled rim, finished in a warm salt-glazed surface with dark Albany slip glazed interior typical of late 19th century American utilitarian pottery. Measures approximately 10 inches tall and about 10 inches across the rim. Surface shows desirable kiln character including glaze variation, speckling, and minor firing imperfections along with expected age related wear including small rim and base chips consistent with period use. A handsome and decorative example of American country stoneware with strong cobalt decoration sought by collectors of primitive and early utilitarian pottery.
