Description

Two volume set of Annual Reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, comprising the Nineteenth Annual Report (1897–1898) printed in 1900 and the Twenty-Second Annual Report (1900–1901) printed in 1904, both under the direction of J. W. Powell. Includes the notable ethnographic study The Hako: A Pawnee Ceremony by Alice C. Fletcher assisted by James R. Murie with music transcribed by Edwin S. Tracy. Bound in original green cloth with gilt stamped Native American portrait decoration to the covers and titled spines. The volumes are richly illustrated with photographic plates, ethnographic imagery, diagrams, and lithographic plates depicting ceremonial scenes, Native American figures, and cultural artifacts including examples such as “Within the Kiva.” Each volume measures approximately 11.5 x 8 inches with about 1.75 inches thickness. Bindings show typical age related wear and rubbing with some edge wear while interiors remain generally clean with strong illustrations and plates.
