Lot 281:
Description
Antique matched leather bag set including a large doctor’s bag and smaller handbag purse, both marked “Genuine Seal Walrus” to the underside. These early 20th century bags feature textured dark seal or walrus grain leather bodies with rigid metal frames, hinged openings, and original clasp hardware. The larger medical bag retains its original handle, locking clasp mechanism, and light interior lining with interior pocket, while the matching purse features a similar metal frame closure and carry handle. Seal and walrus grain leather was valued for its durability and distinctive rippled texture and was commonly used in higher quality travel and professional bags during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The doctor’s bag measures approximately 17 x 8.5 x 9.5 inches and the purse approximately 11.5 x 9.5 x 2 inches. Both exhibit honest age and use including surface wear, leather finish loss, and edge wear consistent with age, presenting as an attractive and authentic early medical and travel accessory set.
