Group of four early reference and dictionary volumes including Spiers & Surenne’s French and English Pronouncing Dictionary (New York: D. Appleton & Co.), A Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures and Mines by Andrew Ure (New York: Appleton), Borer’s Royal Dictionary Abridged: French and English / English and French (London), and An Analysis of the Derivative Words in the English Language by Salem Town (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1836). Volumes feature period leather and cloth bindings and include detailed lexicographic entries, technical engravings illustrating machinery and manufacturing processes, and early linguistic reference material. Condition varies with age-related wear including foxing, edge wear, rubbing to bindings, and occasional staining. Several volumes contain early ownership inscriptions including George Robinson, Fred Farrand, and other period signatures. A desirable group of early linguistic, industrial, and educational reference works dating from the late 18th to mid-19th century.
