Lot 254:
Description
Group of six antique 18th and 19th century educational and language instruction books including The Entertaining Instructor in French and English (London, 1765), Elements of Elocution by John Walker, Fourth Edition (London, 1810), The English Reader by Lindley Murray (Lansingburgh, 1815), The Universal Preceptor: General Grammar of Arts, Sciences and Useful Knowledge by Rev. David Blair (Philadelphia, 1819), The Rhetorical Reader by Ebenezer Porter, D.D. (Andover / New York, 1831), and Latin Grammar by J. H. Allen and J. B. Greenough (Boston, Ginn & Heath, 1878). Several volumes display early ownership inscriptions including George Robinson (Hudson Beds., early 19th century) and Fred Farrand, suggesting long family ownership and use in academic study. Bindings include leather and cloth examples with typical wear, foxing, staining, and losses consistent with early school texts. An interesting group illustrating early education, rhetoric, classical language study, and reading instruction from the late 18th through late 19th century.
