Description

Mid-19th century manuscript autograph and poetry album associated with the Robinson family, containing numerous handwritten poems, sentiments, and inscriptions dated between approximately 1838 and 1843. The album includes entries signed by members of the Robinson family and their circle, including inscriptions referencing George Robinson and Martha Robinson, with several locations noted including Maidstone and other period references. The volume measures approximately 9.25 x 7.5 x 0.3 inches and retains its original embossed leather binding. The interior contains numerous finely penned manuscript poems and devotional writings typical of friendship or autograph albums of the early Victorian period. This album accompanies a documented Robinson family scrimshaw whale tooth by descent through Frederick Farrand and provides important contextual provenance lib4323ing the Robinson family during the exact mid-19th century period associated with American maritime scrimshaw. Entries within the album include several identified signatures and dated inscriptions, among them George Robinson, signed November 29, 1843; Martha Robinson, noted at Maidstone in 1843; Isaac Robinson, signed with a September notation; John King, dated 1839; James Stevens, dated 1837; Elizabeth Stevens, dated 1838; Anna Stevens, dated 1839; and a literary attribution referencing John Mason Good. Such autograph and sentiment albums were popular among educated families during the early Victorian period and were commonly circulated within family and social circles, particularly in literate communities connected to mercantile, religious, or maritime networks.
