Lot 240:
Description
Early 19th century sterling silver julep cup of classic American form featuring a finely hand chased floral and scroll decorated body with molded borders and an applied handle, the interior gilt washed and the base struck with sterling marks and the numeral “5.” The cup is engraved within a decorative cartouche reading “Freddy from Uncle Joseph, ” believed to reference Frederick Farrand of Hudson, New York, a documented relative of George Robinson, tying the piece to the same family archive represented in the accompanying manuscripts within this collection. The cup measures approximately 3.5 inches tall by 2.5 inches in diameter and weighs approximately 80 grams, with a warm period patina and surface wear consistent with age and use. A particularly handsome example of early American coin or sterling silver presentation hollowware with strong decorative engraving and desirable family historical association.
