Lot 232:
Description
Pair of antique acorn form thimble cases including one finely carved wood example and one sterling silver example containing a period thimble, each measuring approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in height. The larger case is turned wood with a beautifully carved acorn cap featuring deeply cut leaf and geometric decoration over a smooth polished wood body, unscrewing to reveal a thimble compartment, a charming example of late 19th century sewing accessories. The second example is a sterling silver acorn form thimble holder with ornate repoussé foliate decoration and suspension loop, marked sterling and housing a period thimble engraved with the monogram “W.P.P.”, weighing approximately 18.77 grams on the scale. Acorn form thimble cases were popular Victorian sewing novelties and were often carried in sewing baskets or chatelaines to protect thimbles when traveling. Both pieces show expected age and use including surface wear and tarnish to the silver but remain attractive and collectible examples of antique sewing accessories.
