Description

Mid-19th century manuscript and printed memorial archive relating to Rebecca Farrand of Hudson, New York, consisting of three pieces including two manuscript poetry diaries and the published volume A Sister’s Memorial: Or, A Little Account of Rebecca Farrand printed in London by W. & F. G. Cash, Bishopsgate Street Without, 1857. The manuscripts contain numerous handwritten poems and reflections attributed to Rebecca Farrand and include a presentation inscription reading “Frederick Farrand, Hudson, N.Y.” The printed memorial volume recounts her life and writings following her death in New York on the 22nd of June, 1856 at the age of 35, as noted within the manuscript title page. The handwritten books retain many pages of period cursive poetry and devotional writings, some accompanied by pressed flowers preserved between pages. The grouping represents a scarce surviving family archive documenting the writings of Rebecca Farrand and the subsequent publication of her memorial work in the mid-19th century. Book sizes range approximately from 7.75 x 5.25 inches to 9 x 7.25 inches. Condition shows typical age wear, toning, and minor staining consistent with period manuscripts and devotional books.
