Description

Early to mid-19th century gentleman’s two-piece suit consisting of a cream colored tailcoat and matching trousers, attributed to maritime or merchant wear and reportedly associated with a whaling merchant. The tailored coat features a standing collar, hidden front closure with fabric covered buttons, long tapered tails, and period hand-stitched construction throughout. The accompanying trousers retain original carved bone buttons and early interior construction consistent with mid-19th century tailoring practices. Interior lining and stitching patterns show characteristics typical of garments produced between the 1830s and 1850s, including reinforced seams and natural fiber textiles. The trousers measure approximately 19 inches across the waist when laid flat and the coat measures approximately 21 inches across the chest from pit to pit. Condition shows expected age wear, light staining, and interior lining deterioration consistent with antique textile garments of the period. A scarce surviving example of early American gentleman’s formal or maritime attire.
