Lot 208:
Description
Pair of Japanese Satsuma porcelain buttons mounted in brass backs, each finely decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel and gilt highlights depicting birds among flowering foliage in traditional landscape scenes. The porcelain surfaces exhibit the characteristic fine crazing associated with Satsuma ware and are bordered by deep cobalt blue bands with gilt scrollwork. One button features swallows flying above flowering branches and garden foliage while the other depicts birds perched among blossoms and plants in a stylized landscape composition. The backs retain their original brass mounts with early pin fittings and evidence of hand-soldered construction typical of late 19th to early 20th century manufacture. Both examples show age-related wear to the brass mounts and minor loss to gilding consistent with use. Decorative and collectible examples of Meiji period Japanese Satsuma porcelain used in ornamental dress buttons.
