Lot 2:
Description
Offered here is an early 20th century Oxxford Clothes oak store display cabinet, a handsome and uncommon survivor from one of America’s premier men’s clothiers. Constructed of solid oak with beautiful grain throughout, the cabinet features double front doors gilt-lettered “Oxxford Clothes” in period Gothic-style script beneath a gold crest emblem. The molded pediment top with central cut-out detail and shaped base give the piece strong architectural presence consistent with early retail fixtures. Interior reveals two open storage compartments divided by a fixed shelf, likely used to house collars, accessories, promotional materials, or folded garments within a high-end menswear shop. The cabinet measures approximately 11” wide x 7” deep x 22” tall as noted. Brass piano hinges appear intact, and the original wooden knobs remain present. Surface shows honest retail wear, finish variation, minor scuffs, and age-appropriate patina consistent with early 1900s commercial use. Gilt lettering remains visible with expected light loss. Oxxford Clothes, founded in Chicago in 1916, became synonymous with luxury American tailoring, making early retail advertising fixtures such as this particularly desirable.
