Lot 195:
Description
Antique Japanese hand painted porcelain tea set dating to the Meiji–Taisho export period circa 1900–1920. The set includes six cups and eight matching saucers decorated with finely painted scenes of geisha and attendants in garden landscapes with trees and flowering plants. The pieces feature iron red enamel rims, pastel landscape backgrounds, and raised gilt accents typical of Japanese export porcelain produced for the Western tea trade. Undersides bear the red Nihon-sei mark meaning “Made in Japan, ” used on export ceramics prior to the 1921 U.S. marking law change. The set shows expected age and light wear consistent with use.
