Description
Large 19th century folio titled Centaine de Peintres containing numerous engraved plates after famous European paintings, measuring approximately 19 x 16 x 2 inches. The volume includes high quality steel engravings published by George Barrie featuring works after prominent artists such as Rosa Bonheur, J. L. E. Meissonier, Cropsey, De Haas, and others, with subjects including Ploughing in Nivernais, Frederick the Great, The Old Mill, Waiting Audience, The Road to Ruin, Christiana at the House of Gaius, Tambourine Girl, and additional historical and genre scenes. Plates are mounted within large margins typical of late 19th century art folios intended for collectors and academic study. The original leather binding titled Centaine de Peintres shows heavy age wear and loss to the leather cover with visible edge deterioration, while the interior plates remain present with scattered foxing and toning consistent with age. A substantial decorative antique art folio containing numerous classical engraved reproductions from the George Barrie publishing series, desirable for collectors of 19th century prints, academic art studies, and decorative framing.
