Antique leather bound copy of The Works of Flavius Josephus, translated by William Whiston and published in New York by Virtue & Yorston, and introduction by Stebbing – this book is in remarkable condition! Measuring approximately 10 x 7.5 x 3 inches, beautifully bound in gilt-tooled leather with raised bands and decorative corner panels and illustrated with engraved plates including a portrait frontispiece of Josephus and a dramatic scene of Herod’s amphitheatre; the volume contains the historical writings of the celebrated Jewish historian along with seven dissertations concerning biblical figures such as Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and James the Just, and retains an early handwritten presentation inscription reading “Frederick Farrand – A token of affection from his dear wife Amelia, ” adding appealing provenance and personal history; overall the book displays expected age with foxing, light toning, and gentle wear to the binding while remaining a handsome and substantial 19th-century historical volume suitable for collectors of antiquarian books, biblical history, and decorative leather bindings.
