Lot 143:
Description
Staffordshire transferware serving set in the “Garden Scenery” pattern by T.J. & J. Mayer of Longport, consisting of a large rectangular platter and three matching bowls decorated in blue transfer with romantic garden landscape scenes, classical architecture, figures, and ornate floral borders typical of mid-19th century English ceramics. The platter measures approximately 20.25 x 16 inches, while the bowls measure roughly 5.5 to 6 inches in diameter, each displaying matching scenic medallions framed by decorative cartouches and border work. The underside bears the printed mark with a lion above the banner reading “Garden Scenery – T.J. & J. Mayer – Longport, ” identifying production from the Staffordshire pottery firm active during the Victorian period. Condition shows age-appropriate wear including light crazing, minor staining, and typical glaze imperfections, but the pieces remain an attractive and displayable example of classic English blue transferware.
