Lot 140:
Description
Antique mid-19th century guide book titled Green-Wood featuring a large folding lithographed map of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, dated 1855. The embossed green cloth cover is attractively decorated with geometric borders and gilt title, and the interior contains an impressive detailed fold-out cemetery plan illustrating the grounds with numbered plots, paths, ponds, and landscape features. The map is titled Green-Wood Cemetery 1855 and was lithographed by Snyder, Black & Sturman of 81 Fulton Street, New York, an important period lithographic firm. Measuring approximately 6.25 x 3.75 inches when closed, the guide reflects the growing popularity of Green-Wood during the rural cemetery movement, when the grounds became both a burial place and a destination for Victorian-era visitors. Condition shows expected age-related toning and fold wear to the map, but the piece remains a scarce and desirable early cartographic guide to one of America’s most historic cemeteries.
