Description
Mid-19th century religious and missionary publication titled Rufus Hill: The Missionary Child in Siam, A Memoir Written by His Mother, Now in America, published in Philadelphia by the American Sunday-School Union at 316 Chestnut Street. Copyright entered according to Act of Congress in 1854. The work recounts the life of Rufus Hill, the child of Christian missionaries serving in Siam (modern-day Thailand), and was produced as part of the American Sunday-School Union’s widely distributed series of missionary and educational literature intended for youth readers in the United States. The volume includes engraved illustrations including a frontispiece depicting a Mongol gentleman as well as a vignette sailing scene on the title page. The book retains its original cloth binding and measures approximately 6 x 4 x 0.3 inches. An early ownership inscription reads “Amelia G. Winslow given by Biny J. Morris from St. John’s Church S.S. Feb. 10, 1856.” Condition shows age toning, foxing, and wear consistent with mid-19th century printed material. An appealing example of early American missionary literature reflecting Protestant missions in Southeast Asia during the 19th century.
