Description

Early 18th century two volume leather bound set titled A Collection of the Works of William Penn, printed in London in 1726 and sold by the Assigns of J. Sowle at the Bible in George-Yard, Lombard Street. This important early printing compiles the writings of William Penn (1644–1718), the influential Quaker theologian, political thib4323er, and founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. The work includes A Journal of His Life together with many original letters and papers not previously published, providing one of the earliest comprehensive collections of Penn’s writings following his death. Both volumes retain their original full leather bindings with raised bands and exhibit expected early 18th century wear. An early ownership inscription reads “John Rakestraw His Book Bought in the Year 1726,” indicating contemporary ownership at the time of publication and adding significant historical provenance. Also included with the books is a later handwritten letter referencing the set from Jackson, Michigan dated January 12, 1931. A desirable colonial era printing associated with early Quaker history and the founder of Pennsylvania, appealing to collectors of early theology, colonial American history, and antiquarian leather bound books.
