Lot 115:
Description
Antique 19th century blue and white transferware oval serving platter featuring a classic chinoiserie landscape scene with pagodas, stylized trees, a bridge with figures, water scene with boat, and birds in flight, surrounded by an ornate geometric and floral patterned border typical of early English transferware influenced by Chinese export porcelain designs. The platter measures approximately 13.5 x 11 x 1.5 inches and is executed in deep cobalt blue transfer decoration on a white earthenware body. Such scenic patterns were widely produced by English Staffordshire potteries during the early to mid-19th century as part of the popular fascination with Chinese-inspired decorative motifs. The reverse is unmarked and shows typical glaze crazing and age wear consistent with antique transferware of the period. A decorative and desirable piece well suited for display or collection of early Staffordshire, English transferware, or blue and white ceramics.
