Lot 111:
Description
Antique two-volume set of The Works of Peter Pindar, Esquire, published in Dublin and printed by William Porter for L. White, P. Byrne, W. Porter, J. Moore, J. Jones and W. Jones, dated 1795. Peter Pindar was the well-known pen name of English satirist Dr. John Wolcot (1738–1819), whose biting political and social satire gained immense popularity in the late 18th century, often targeting King George III and prominent figures of the era. This handsome Georgian-period set is bound in full leather boards with red and black spine labels and gilt decoration, retaining an attractive period appearance suitable for display. The interiors show expected age toning and scattered foxing consistent with late 18th century paper, with an early handwritten inscription dated January 12th, 1829 referencing Detroit and Wind River, suggesting early American ownership and adding an interesting historical association to the set. Volume II title page reads The Works of Peter Pindar, Esquire, In Two Volumes, Volume II, Dublin, printed by William Porter, 1795, with contents including satirical odes, epistles, and political commentary reflective of the turbulent intellectual climate of the late Georgian period. A desirable late 18th century literary set combining historical satire, attractive leather binding, and early handwritten provenance.
