Description
Complete two-volume set of A History of the Life of Edward the Black Prince by G. P. R. James, published in London by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman, Paternoster Row, 1836. This early 19th century historical work chronicles the life and military exploits of Edward of Woodstock (1330–1376), the famed “Black Prince, ” eldest son of King Edward III and one of the most celebrated commanders of the Hundred Years’ War. The set is handsomely bound in matching brown cloth boards with ornate gilt-decorated spine cartouches reading “James’s History of Edward the Black Prince” with volume designations I and II, retaining attractive period bindings typical of the era. Title pages present in both volumes and dated 1836 with publisher’s imprint, with the second volume illustrated with a ring device on the title page. Interiors show expected age toning and scattered foxing with wear to spine ends and edges consistent with age, while the bindings remain solid and the pair displays very well on the shelf. A desirable early Victorian historical publication and an attractive two-volume set relating to medieval English history and the legendary prince whose victories at Crécy and Poitiers secured his place among England’s greatest military figures.
