Lot 109:
Description
Offered here is a desirable three-volume set of Pencillings by the Way by N. P. Willis, Second Edition, published in London by John Macrone, St. James’s Square, 1836 (MDCCCXXXVI). Complete in three volumes as issued, this early edition of Willis’s celebrated travel narrative captures the observations and reflections of one of America’s most popular 19th-century literary figures. Nathaniel Parker Willis was widely read on both sides of the Atlantic, and Pencillings by the Way remains among his most noted works, offering vivid commentary on European society, culture, and politics. The set retains its original period paper spine labels reading: “Pencillings by the WayBy N. P. Willis, Esq. Second Edition Three Volumes” Bindings show expected age, edge wear, rubbing, and loss to spine paper consistent with early 19th-century cloth bindings. Interiors display light toning and scattered foxing, typical for the period, yet remain readable and complete. A handsome and increasingly scarce early 1836 three-volume travel set — ideal for collectors of 19th-century American literature, early travel writing, or antiquarian multi-volume works. A strong shelf presence piece for the serious book collector.
