Description

Early to mid 19th century carved ivory chess pieces including natural ivory and red stained opposing sides, representing a partial and incomplete set of finely turned and carved pieces typical of mid-19th century European production. The pieces feature classic forms including castellated rooks, carved horse head knights, ring-turned queens and kings, slender bishops, and pawns mounted on circular bases. The ivory displays a warm, aged patina while the red stained pieces retain strong color. The pieces are currently housed in a modern display case used only for presentation and not original to the set. Several pieces are missing and some examples show damage or breaks requiring repair as shown in the photographs. Despite the incompleteness, the group retains strong decorative appeal and represents attractive early ivory carving suitable for restoration, display, or completion with period replacements. A desirable group of early 19th century ivory chess pieces demonstrating the craftsmanship and stylistic characteristics of the period.
