Lot 364:
Description
Early 19th century Staffordshire blue transferware plate by J & W Ridgway featuring a romantic scenic landscape with figures beside a draped monument beneath a tree, framed by an ornate molded border of cartouches depicting classical and pastoral figures surrounded by scrolling rococo ornament. The underside bears the impressed J & W Ridgway mark used by the Staffordshire pottery firm of John and William Ridgway during the early decades of the 19th century. Measuring approximately 9 inches in diameter, the plate displays attractive early transfer printing with visible glaze crazing, kiln speckling, and light discoloration consistent with age, making it a desirable example of early English Staffordshire transferware.
