Lot 352:
Description
Group of three original watercolor and gouache child portrait studies by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, two of which are signed and dated 1951 and identified as Sally as a young child. The works depict intimate early childhood moments including a toddler rubbing her eye, a young child drib4323ing from a cup, and a bundled infant portrait study. Executed with loose expressive brushwork and delicate washes of color, the compositions demonstrate Schafer’s sensitive handling of childhood expression and form, capturing gesture and personality with minimal line and soft tonal modeling. Two examples remain framed with linen mats and period frames including a label for Wright’s Fine Arts Center of Jackson, Michigan, while one remains unframed on illustration board. Image size of the unframed example measures approximately 15 x 20 inches with framed examples measuring approximately 18.25 x 21 inches and 17.75 x 21.75 inches overall. A charming and personal grouping of mid-century portrait studies from the Schafer studio collection.
