Lot 347:
Description
Original oil on canvas still life by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting several eggs arranged across a vividly patterned cloth rendered in expressive, abstract brushwork. The composition features bold turquoise, gold, and red decorative elements with thickly painted eggs creating dimensional highlights across the surface. Schafer’s loose, modernist handling of color and form reflects his post-war artistic training and experimentation with abstraction after studying at the Art Institute of Chicago following service in World War II with the 13th Armored Division in Italy. The canvas measures approximately 26 x 10 inches and remains on its original stretcher. This work comes from the estate of Henry Schafer, whose paintings were long displayed and sold through the family business Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, Michigan, operating since 1898, with additional works historically handled through Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
