Lot 346:
Description
Original oil on canvas figure study by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a seated female nude viewed from behind. The composition is rendered in a loose and expressive painterly manner with warm flesh tones set against a vibrant green ground and a contrasting purple draped surface, emphasizing form and gesture rather than strict realism. Schafer’s confident brushwork and studio approach reflect the academic training he received at the Art Institute of Chicago following his service in World War II with the 13th Armored Division in Italy. Canvas measures approximately 18 x 24 inches and is mounted on a Grumbacher New York stretcher. This work comes from the estate of Henry Schafer, whose paintings were long displayed and sold through the family business Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, Michigan, operating since 1898, and whose works were also handled through Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
