Lot 345:
Description
Original oil on canvas portrait attributed to Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a young woman believed to be the artist’s daughter Sally. The composition presents the sitter in a three quarter bust portrait wearing a soft pib4323 blouse with ruffled collar and pendant necklace, her dark hair tied with a ribbon and set against a luminous green background. Schafer’s confident brushwork and warm palette create a naturalistic likeness while retaining the expressive character of mid century studio portraiture. Canvas measures approximately 20 x 24 inches and is mounted on a Grumbacher New York stretcher. This work comes from the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, whose paintings were displayed and sold for many years through the family business Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, operating since 1898, and whose works were also handled through the Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
