Lot 336:
Description
Original oil on canvas painting by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting his young daughter Sally seated in a chair surrounded by several dolls and toys. The composition captures a quiet, intimate moment of childhood, with Sally shown in a soft pib4323 dress and white stockings, gently holding a doll while others rest at her feet. Executed with loose, expressive brushwork and a muted palette of greens, pib4323s, and warm earth tones, the painting carries the feel of a personal studio study, emphasizing mood and memory over strict realism. The surrounding toys and dolls reinforce the domestic setting and reflect a tender portrait of childhood within the artist’s own family. Canvas measures approximately 30 x 40 inches and is mounted on a Little Gallery stretcher from Fort Wayne, Indiana. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer, a WWII veteran who served with the 13th Armored Division in Italy and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Shafer displayed and sold many of his works for decades through Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, a family business operating since 1898, with additional works handled through the Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
