Lot 334:
Description
Original oil on canvas portrait by Jackson, Michigan artist Henry Schafer depicting a stylized female figure in profile with dark hair gathered in a bun and adorned with a strand of pearls. The composition features a graceful elongated neck and simplified form set against a richly layered teal and green abstract background. Schafer employs loose expressive brushwork with subtle tonal transitions in the skin and background, contrasted by the bright dotted pearl necklace that arcs across the hair. The piece reflects the artist’s mid-century modern sensibility and confident painterly style. Canvas measures approximately 16 x 20 inches. From the estate of Jackson, Michigan artist Keith Shafer, a WWII veteran who served in Italy with the 13th Armored Division and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Shafer family owned Schafer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson, operating since 1898, where many of his works were displayed and sold throughout the 1950s–1970s, with additional works handled through the Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
