Description
Oil on canvas portrait painting attributed to Jackson, Michigan artist Keith Schaefer depicting a seated woman in profile against a soft green ground. The composition shows confident mid-century modern brushwork with expressive line work defining the sitter’s features, clothing, and hands, while loose painterly passages create a soft atmospheric background. The subject is presented in a thoughtful seated pose wearing a gray dress with subtle tonal modeling and warm flesh tones. Canvas measures approximately 24 x 30 inches and is mounted on a stretcher. From the estate of Keith Schaefer, a Jackson, Michigan artist and WWII veteran of the 13th Armored Division who served in Italy and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Schaefer’s paintings were frequently displayed and sold through Schaefer’s Cleaners in downtown Jackson during the 1950s–1970s, and examples also passed through Detroit auction house DuMouchelles.
