Description
Antique American salt glazed stoneware butter churn featuring a hand painted cobalt floral decoration beneath a large “6” gallon capacity mark on the front. The churn displays a classic late 19th century utilitarian form with applied lug handles, incised shoulder bands, and a thick rolled rim, while the interior is finished in dark Albany slip glaze typical of butter churns and storage vessels of the period. The cobalt decoration shows a stylized floral motif with spiral elements and trailing stem, adding strong visual character to the otherwise functional vessel. Condition shows age and honest use including visible base cracks and typical surface wear consistent with early farmhouse stoneware. Measures approximately 16 inches tall and about 8 inches across the opening. A desirable example of American country stoneware combining bold cobalt decoration with the sought-after six gallon churn form, appealing to collectors of primitive kitchen antiques and early American pottery.
