Description

Antique American salt glazed stoneware butter churn with applied lug handles and attractive cobalt blue floral decoration on the front. The churn is hand thrown with two incised bands at the shoulder and retains its traditional cylindrical form typical of late 19th to early 20th century American utilitarian pottery. Interior shows dark Albany slip style glaze common to butter churns of the period. The piece measures approximately 15 inches tall and approximately 9 inches across the mouth and is marked with a hand painted “4” indicating four gallon capacity. Condition shows typical age and use including scattered glaze wear and small base roughness but no major structural damage observed. A classic example of American farmhouse stoneware with strong decorative cobalt work, highly desirable for collectors of early American pottery and country primitives.
