Description

Large antique American salt-glazed stoneware butter churn featuring hand-painted cobalt floral decoration with a prominent “6” capacity mark to the shoulder. The churn has applied lug handles, classic tapered cylindrical form, and retains its wooden lid and dasher assembly. The interior is finished in dark Albany slip glaze typical of 19th century utilitarian stoneware. The vessel measures approximately 17–18 inches tall excluding the dasher and displays strong cobalt decoration with attractive glaze texture throughout. Condition shows honest age and use including scattered rim wear, small chips, and a visible vertical hairline extending from the rim down the body, along with minor base edge wear, while the wooden lid and dasher show expected wear from use but remain intact. A desirable and decorative example of early American stoneware butter churn with original wooden components.
