Lot 313:
Description
Antique American stoneware crock stamped “J.A. & C.W. Underwood Fort Edward, N.Y.” featuring bold hand-painted cobalt floral decoration with impressed “3” gallon capacity mark beneath the maker’s stamp. The form is classic cylindrical with rolled rim and applied lug handles, finished in traditional salt glaze with warm buff stoneware body and dark Albany slip glazed interior. The cobalt decoration shows attractive kiln texture and natural firing character typical of Fort Edward, New York production. Measures approximately 11 inches tall and about 10 inches across the rim. Condition shows expected age and use including light surface wear and glaze imperfections consistent with 19th century utilitarian stoneware. A desirable marked Fort Edward example with strong cobalt decoration from the well-known Underwood pottery.
