Lot 312:
Description
Antique American stoneware butter churn featuring hand-painted cobalt floral decoration on a tall cylindrical form with applied lug handles and rolled rim. The body displays a classic salt-glazed gray surface with attractive kiln speckling and natural firing character typical of 19th century American utilitarian pottery. Interior retains its original Albany slip glaze and includes the wooden dash support cross piece used for the churn mechanism. Measures approximately 16 inches tall and about 9 inches across the rim. Condition shows age-related wear including a visible hairline at the base and light surface imperfections consistent with period use. A handsome and authentic example of early American dairy stoneware with desirable cobalt decoration and original interior components.
