Description
1888 Portrait and Biographical Album of Hillsdale County, Michigan published by Chapman Brothers of Chicago, containing full page engraved portraits and biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens of Hillsdale County. The volume also includes portraits and short biographies of the Governors of Michigan and the Presidents of the United States. Bound in original black leather over boards with ornate embossed decoration and gilt titled cover and spine reading “Portrait and Biographical Album – Hillsdale County Michigan.” Interior pages feature steel engraved portrait plates including figures such as George Washington, John Adams, and Michigan Governor Josiah W. Begole along with numerous portraits of local citizens accompanied by biographical accounts. Measures approximately 9 x 11 inches with about 3 inch thickness. Condition shows heavy wear to the leather binding including rubbing, scuffing, and edge wear with cracking at hinges, while the interior pages remain generally clean and readable. A desirable late 19th century Michigan county history and genealogical reference documenting early residents and civic figures of Hillsdale County.
