Description
1829 early American religious periodical titled The Friend: A Religious and Literary Journal, Volume II, edited by Robert Smith and published in Philadelphia by John Richardson with Adam Waldie printer, containing essays, theological writings, and literary content associated with the Society of Friends (Quaker tradition). The volume retains its original marbled boards with leather spine titled in gilt “The Friend” and numbered “2,” measuring approximately 11.25 x 9.5 x 1.5 inches. The interior bears an early ownership inscription “Frederick Farrand, Hudson, ” connecting the volume to the prominent Farrand family of Hudson, New York. The book exhibits heavy age-related wear and moisture exposure throughout with staining, waviness, and binding distress, yet remains a compelling early American volume. Particularly notable are numerous pressed botanical specimens carefully laid between the pages, including large fern and compound leaf examples preserved within the text, offering an evocative glimpse into early 19th century naturalist collecting practices. A visually striking and historically interesting American religious journal with Hudson River Valley family provenance.
