Description

Mid-19th century handwritten manuscript commonplace or scrapbook book belonging to George Robinson of Hudson, New York, dated 1832 and measuring approximately 13.25 x 8.5 x 2 inches. The volume is bound in a period leather spine with marbled paper boards and contains numerous handwritten pages filled with poems, verses, literary excerpts, notes, and copied writings typical of 19th century personal commonplace books. Many pages feature carefully written ib4323 script along with pasted newspaper clippings, printed poetry, literary excerpts, and illustrations gathered and preserved by the original owner. The front inscription reads George Robinson Hudson 1832 with an additional notation referencing an anecdote of Mr. A. Lincoln, suggesting later additions or continued use of the volume over time. The book also contains several original drawings and ib4323 sketches including architectural and landscape scenes as well as pasted engravings and printed illustrations. Throughout the book are clippings from period newspapers and publications, poetry fragments, and literary passages reflecting the intellectual and cultural interests of the compiler. The binding shows heavy wear with losses to the spine and edges, scattered page wear, toning, and loose inserts consistent with age and extensive use, but the manuscript content remains largely intact and legible. An evocative and highly personal 19th century manuscript volume offering insight into the literary habits and interests of its owner and appealing to collectors of manuscript books, Americana, early scrapbooks, and Hudson River Valley history.
