Early 19th century religious and historical volume titled Diary of Alexander Jaffray, Provost of Aberdeen, with memoirs concerning the rise, progress, and persecutions of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in the north of Scotland, written by John Barclay and published in London by Darton & Harvey with Alexander Brown & Co. of Aberdeen and William Whyte & Co. of Edinburgh, dated MDCCCXXXIV (1834), second edition. The book is bound in original cloth boards with printed paper spine label reading Jaffray and the Friends in Scotland. The front flyleaf bears a period presentation inscription reading “Elizabeth Robinson from her affectionate Mother Elizabeth Stevens 5th Month, 1836.” Interior retains title page, introduction, and appendix with typical foxing and age toning throughout. The work documents the life of Alexander Jaffray, a 17th-century Scottish statesman who later became an early Quaker convert. Measures approximately 9 x 5.75 x 1.5 inches.
