Description: Collection of six early 19th century mathematics and scientific works bound in period leather, including two volumes of Charles Hutton’s A Course of Mathematics for the Use of Academies as well as Private Tuition, third American edition published in New York in 1822; an American edition of S. F. Lacroix’s Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic printed in Cambridge by Hilliard and Metcalf in 1818; Charles Vyse’s The Key to the Tutor’s Guide or The Arithmetician’s Repository, eighth edition printed in London in 1802; John Bonnycastle’s An Introduction to Algebra, eighth edition printed in London in 1808; along with additional early mathematics instructional volumes intended for academies and private study. The group retains original leather bindings with gilt spine bands and labels and measures approximately 6.75 x 4.5 inches up to 8.75 x 6.5 inches. Condition shows typical age related wear including rubbing, edge wear, and foxing to pages, with several volumes bearing period handwritten ownership inscriptions including George Brown dated March 1831 and George Robinson. An appealing and historically significant group of early mathematical and educational texts reflecting the formative period of American and English academic instruction.
